I got a call from an on site electrician about a drive that had failed with a short-circuit fault. (The site transformer had failed and taken the drive out with it.) The drive was controlling a pump watering potatoes on a farm in Herefordshire, and to make things worse it was on one of the hottest days of the year. This farm supply 2 of the UK’s biggest supermarkets with potatoes and strawberries.
Fortunately, we had a 37kW IMO Precision Controls Ltd drive in stock, so the next morning I travelled up to site with the replacement. Before attending, I asked the customer to send over some photos so I could understand what I was dealing with. From the photos, I also spotted that one of the cartridges on the SPD had blown, so we took a replacement SPD with us too. Ben installed the new drive while I stayed on site to commission it and make sure everything was working as it should be before leaving. When we pressed start on the HMI the motor started turning and you could see the water spraying into the air from 100 meters away.
The transformer was sorted that same day, and by 1 o’clock the following afternoon, the new drive was installed, commissioned and the pump was back up and running. The farm owner was so happy with the service that he gave me three pallets of fresh strawberries however, only two pallets made it home.
