What IATF 16949 is
IATF 16949 is the automotive-sector quality management standard maintained by the International Automotive Task Force. It builds on ISO 9001 and adds OEM-aligned requirements for APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning), PPAP (Production Part Approval Process), FMEA, statistical process control (SPC), MSA and supplier development. It is mandated by most global OEMs for Tier 1 supply and cascaded down the chain.
Why IATF 16949 matters
- Required for direct supply to most global automotive OEMs.
- Demonstrates control of APQP, PPAP and PSW submissions.
- Confirms SPC, Cpk and MSA discipline in production processes.
- Reduces second-party audit overhead when bidding for new automotive work.

Frequently asked questions
No. IATF 16949 replaced ISO/TS 16949 in 2016 and is now a standalone IATF document, used alongside ISO 9001.
Independent aftermarket parts may not, but anything supplied into an OEM service or production channel almost always will.
Yes, but the cost and audit burden are significant. Many small shops hold ISO 9001 and supply to Tier 1s under their customer's quality umbrella instead.
