Mersey tidal power takes another planning step: what engineering suppliers should watch
Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has identified the area between Bromborough and Otterspool as the preferred development corridor for the proposed Mersey Tidal Power Project.
Announced on 29 October 2026, the recommendation covers approximately 1.5 miles of the River Mersey and is due to be considered by the Combined Authority on 6 November.
The proposed scheme could generate up to 1GW of electricity and provide flood protection.
What happens next?
The Combined Authority will consider the preferred corridor alongside a proposed funding approach.
Further work would develop the engineering design, environmental assessments and commercial arrangements ahead of a future Development Consent Order application.
Construction remains dependent on development consent and a final investment decision, which the authority currently expects in 2030.
For suppliers, this is a project to follow as its requirements develop.
Why could it matter to engineering businesses?
Our view is that a project of this nature could become relevant to a broad range of capabilities, including mechanical and electrical engineering, fabrication, marine systems, monitoring and specialist manufacturing.
The eventual scope and purchasing requirements will depend on the approved design and delivery arrangements.
Businesses interested in potential involvement can prepare by:
Identifying which capabilities could suit marine and energy infrastructure.
Reviewing relevant project experience and technical evidence.
Understanding potential quality and environmental requirements.
Following official project updates and future procurement notices.
Considering partnerships where a wider package of expertise may be needed.
