Where UK engineering suppliers could benefit from aerospace and offshore wind investment

Two announcements this month highlight potential growth areas for UK engineering suppliers: a long-term aerospace programme with Rolls-Royce and new analysis of demand for offshore wind castings and forgings.

Aerospace: a £2.5 billion programme

On 28 October 2026, the government announced an agreement with Rolls-Royce covering a jointly funded, 10-year, £2.5 billion programme for next-generation jet-engine technology.

The announcement identifies advanced materials, electronic systems, advanced manufacturing, robotics and AI among the technologies to be developed. It also includes a commitment to work with the wider aerospace sector so UK-based suppliers can benefit.

Future government support remains subject to approvals and agreed terms. The agreement establishes a framework for future support; no new grants had been awarded through it at the time of announcement.

Offshore wind: a long-term component opportunity

A report published on 15 October by the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership and Cast Metals Federation estimates approximately £36 billion of demand for castings and forgings within the UK offshore wind pipeline between 2026 and 2050.

It identifies potential to expand UK supply in areas including forged rings, hub castings and drivetrain components. With targeted investment, the report estimates that UK manufacturers could develop capability to supply 37% of demand by weight.

These figures describe a long-term market opportunity and potential manufacturing capability. Actual purchasing will depend on projects progressing and suppliers meeting customer requirements.

What could this mean for engineering businesses?

Our view is that suppliers should use these developments to assess where their existing capabilities could fit.

For machining, casting, forging, inspection, automation and specialist materials businesses, useful next steps include reviewing:

  • Relevant components and processes within the target supply chain.

  • Customer requirements for quality, traceability and testing.

  • Available capacity, equipment and skills.

  • Potential partners needed to deliver a wider package of work.

Clear evidence of capability can help buyers assess a supplier’s fit when requirements emerge.
