Common questions about Iron Castings
Prototype castings using 3D-printed sand moulds typically ship in 3 to 6 weeks. Tooled production castings take 8 to 14 weeks for pattern build and first-off sampling, then 4 to 8 weeks per repeat batch depending on machining.
Grey iron (EN-GJL) is cheaper and damps vibration well, ideal for machine bases and housings. Ductile iron (EN-GJS) has much higher tensile strength and elongation, so it is the default for load-bearing or safety-critical parts.
Yes. Many UK iron foundries take orders from single prototypes upwards using existing tooling or printed sand. Below 50 to 100 parts per year, expect a per-part premium; above that, tooled production is usually cheaper.
